Celebrate the grape harvest in style

Perfect time of year to put Niagara on your travel itinerary

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — As Niagara’s winemakers turn their attention to harvesting the grapes that will become the 2011 vintage, the time is perfect to plan a visit to the picturesque vineyards of the Niagara Peninsula.

The 2011 vintage promises to be a good one, the latest in a run of several strong years that have produced some outstanding award-winning Ontario wines. There is a special ambiance among the vines during harvest time, adding a new dimension to the tourism experience in Niagara.
“Niagara’s wineries are special places, offering excellent wines that are difficult to find anywhere else but at the winery,” said Anthony Annunziata, Vice-President of Marketing at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls and Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa. “Wine tours take you right to the source, hearing directly from the winemaker how to best enjoy particular wines. A visit to a winery puts you in a unique setting, a vineyard backdrop you can only find in a select few places around the world.”
Winery tour packages not only take you to several different wineries to sample some of the wide variety offered in Niagara, but they also save you the worry of having to drive. Bicycle tours are a unique way to travel Niagara’s idyllic rural roads between wineries. Winery visits also enable you to learn how to properly store your wines, when and if they should be aged and what foods they will match best with.
Niagara Falls, one of Canada’s leading tourism destinations, is only a short drive from the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and is the base for many winery tour packages offered through local hotels. It also offers restaurants, shows, concerts, clubs, attractions and casinos, not to mention the Niagara Falls themselves, to add some diversity to your trip.
“Swirling and sipping in a vineyard is a great way to spend your afternoon, but it is really just the beginning of what Niagara has to offer,” says Annunziata. “A chef-prepared dinner using local ingredients is a perfect cap to a day spent among the vines. After dinner, there are literally limitless options available to ensure your is a truly memorable one.”
Niagara also happens to be the home of Ontario’s grape wine harvest celebration. The 60th Niagara Wine Festival, based at historic Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines, features more than 100 events between Sept. 16th and 25th, including winery tours, tastings, concerts, Niagara cuisine, wine seminars, live entertainment and one of the largest street parades in the country.
Admission to the park is free, where wine will be available by the sample, glass or bottle and matched with some of the finest food Niagara has to offer.

Stop to smell the lavender

Aromatherapy awaits in Canada’s parcel of Provence.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-by Giancarlo La Giorgia -

If you’re passing through Québec’s Eastern Townships region this summer, with the wind off Lake Memphremagog blowing just right, you may find your attention drawn by a distant, but distinct, floral perfume. That spritz of sweet-smelling air is Mother Nature’s way of advertising the Bleu Lavande lavender farm, just past the covered bridge in the rural hamlet of Fitch Bay.

Despite the challenge of long, cold winters, owners Pierre Pellerin and Christine Deschesnes defied conventional wisdom – and conquered their own inexperience – to slowly nurture their dream of planting a bit of Provence on 100 acres of land they purchased near the Québec-Vermont border. After a false start in 2002 (the first winter killed off all but 10,000 plants), Bleu Lavande now boasts over 300,000 true lavender plants under cultivation, all grown without chemicals or pesticides, making it the second-biggest operation of its kind in North America.
A farmstead boutique opened in 2004, and there are now many Bleu Lavande shops across the province, including several in the Montreal area. But even if it’s a bit out of the way, there is a lot more in store for visitors to the original location. You’ll find the brand’s full range of lavender-based products, from lotions, soaps and cleaning products, to lavender cooking ingredients, chocolates and honey, as well as candles, linen water and even potted English and Munstead lavender plants (the latter’s petals are edible).
During warm months, there are also lots of unique activities, including guided tours of the farm and distillery offering insight on lavender oil’s calming effects and antiseptic properties, catered picnics featuring local products, and relaxing open-air massages overlooking the tranquil sea of purple blooms. Each summer, there’s also a three-day Lavender Fair, with cooking workshops, live music, painting exhibitions and more.

International arrivals to Canada climbed 2% in June 2011.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-China and India markets show the way as first half of 2011 closes on a high, reports latest CTC Tourism Snapshot.
Almost two million travellers came to Canada in June 2011, a 2% year-on-year increase, says the latest Tourism Snapshot, just published by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.
However, this positive news was slightly offset by the year-to-date total of 6.4 million overnight visitors to this country, a 1% dip on the same period in 2010.
Here’s a breakdown of other key nuggets:

    • The China market has an ever-growing appetite for Canada. It posted the largest gain in overnight arrivals (up 23% on June 2010), and its year-to-date total is up 19%, too.

    • There was more positive news for the thirPublish Postd consecutive month from Mexico: an 8% upturn in overnighters to Canada over the same month last year.

    • The Germany market rebounded after five months of decline with a 10% boost in arrival numbers over June 2010. India (14%), Australia (8%), and France (5%) were other CTC key international overseas markets to report gains in numbers crossing Canadian passport control.

    • Not such happy tidings from Japan: a 30% drop in overnight arrivals to Canada was symptomatic of the ongoing troubles the country is suffering in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami.

    • South Koreans are not travelling to Canada in the same numbers, either: June 2011 witnessed a 12% drop in arrivals, a fifth consecutive monthly fall.

    • Uncle Sam steered 1.4 million Americans to Canada in June 2011, 2% more than in the same month of 2010. They increased their  “other” modes of travel (+10%) and air travel (+4%) though fewer crossed the border by auto (-2%).

    • However, the US year-to-date figures for the first six months of 2011 show a 1% overall decline to 4.6 million overnight trips.

    • Newfoundland and Labrador (38%) and Nova Scotia (25%) were the American provinces of choice for the first half of 2011, whereas Prince Edward Island suffered an 89% tumble.

    • Canadians continue to flock for the travel exit routes: outbound travel in June 2011 hit two million, a 6% year-on-year increase.

    • Canadian consumer confidence trembled again. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, slipped 2.5 points on May ’11 to 83.1.

    • The US is a bundle of nerves, too.The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell to 58.5.

Minister Baird Marks Next Step in Making Trade and Travel over Canada-U.S. Border Easier

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-No. 249 - August 29, 2011 - 2:15 p.m. ET) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today delivered on a pledge to Canadians to release two reports summarizing consultations on the Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness.

“Canadians recently gave our government a strong mandate to focus on the economy and secure Canada’s recovery,” said Minister Baird. “Speeding up legitimate trade and travel between Canada and the U.S. is important in that regard, and I want to thank people who took the time to provide us with so much thoughtful input.”

The reports summarize public input received on two important issues: regulatory cooperation between the two countries and security and trade across the shared border.
In total, the Government of Canada received input from more than 1,000 Canadians and almost 200 submissions from groups and organizations, including business groups, provinces and territories, municipalities, organized labour, civil society groups, academics and think tanks. Both sets of consultations were conducted in spring and summer 2011.
“These are important issues for Canada and Canadians, and the response we received certainly reflects that,” said Minister Baird. “This feedback will help ensure Canada’s interests are protected as we move forward.”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama announced the Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness and the creation of a Regulatory Cooperation Council on February 4, 2011. Senior officials from both countries are currently in discussions to develop joint action plans for the shared border vision and the Regulatory Cooperation Council. Both plans are expected to be released in the near future once details are finalized.
The consultation summary reports and further information on the Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness are available online at www.borderactionplan.gc.ca.

EAP Project will promote tourism in Canada’s North
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Haines Junction, yukon – Prime Minister Harper today visited the joint construction site of both the new Kluane National Park Visitor Centre and of the Dä Kų Cultural Centre. Both centres are located just outside Kluane National Park on traditional Champagne and Aishihik First Nations land. The Prime Minister was joined by Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, and Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski, as well as Member of Parliament Ryan Leef, and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) Chief James Allen.

“Canadians who visit Kluane will fully enjoy the natural beauty that our country has to offer and will be able to learn more about our remarkable First Nations’ heritage,” said the Prime Minister. “The two new centres being built near spectacular Kluane National Park will give a boost to the local economy through new jobs and tourism revenues.” The visitor centre, which will be housed within the cultural centre, will offer Canadians and international tourists insight into the park’s natural and cultural history, information on hiking and other activities, and allow visitors to experience the rich history and culture of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

The Government of Canada supported the new visitor centre through the Economic Action Plan’s Improving Parks Canada’s National Historic Sites and Visitor Facilities program. Parks Canada will lease the space for the visitor centre from the CAFN. The Dä Kų Cultural Centre will be used as a community gathering place for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people – a place where they can celebrate their culture, traditions, languages and arts, and share the wisdom of their Elders with others, including park visitors. The Government of Canada contributed to the construction of the cultural centre under Infrastructure Canada’s Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

“Nagaland - Journey through the choir of clouds” – a short documentary

Mon, Nagaland (a still from the documentary)
A short travel documentary by Jim Ankan Deka showcasing the grandeur enchanting land of Nagaland, a hill state of India, mixed with its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant culture.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Jul 22, 2011 - Nagaland, a state in the remote north eastern part of India, continues to remain an alluring mystery to all those who ever saw, heard or even remotely experienced a whiff of it. In spite of the growing rate of tourists and travellers flocking to this region, there are certain aspects of the people and life here that continue to be shrouded in an age old enigma. The grandeur of this enchanting land mixed with its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant culture and enthralling history is precisely what Jim Ankan Deka brilliantly showcases in his documentary “Nagaland-Journey through the choir of clouds”.
“Nagaland - A place where swirling clouds gently kiss the mighty hills, where nature preserves in its bosom the primeval traditions of the land, where picturesque sights await at every blink, where ethnic notes conflate with temporary melodies....” As these words make their way to the heart of the viewer, an overwhelming sense of wonder and reverence permeates the soul, and one cannot help but agree that an enlightening and profound impression is what comes across through the documentary, as it highlights the tribal life, culture, myths and folklore of Nagaland. Imbued with the pristine sounds and moods of nature; beliefs, customs and social behaviour of the Naga people, “Nagaland-journey through the choir of clouds”, with its freshness and simplicity has a fragrance of the primeval and ethnic combined with the contemporary about it. A deep sense of sensitivity can be deciphered in the way it depicts the life and history of Nagaland and its people, the hospitality and warmth of the people that comes so naturally to them, the age old myths and folklore passed on from generation to generation, and an amalgamation of the past and the present harmoniously co existing.

A sense of travelling back in time engulfs one, as the documentary takes us on a journey through the districts of Nagaland encompassing the serene life of the people and filling one with a sense of detachment from the chaos and humdrum of modern civilization. The documentary comes across as a landmark in itself as it explores an all embracing picture of a region, its people and their story. The director manages to have several scenes that give a glimpse into the core of Naga society with its myriad tribes and the remnants of the early animist culture and ancient traditions existing parallel to the contemporary life of the new generation. The entire team, including the script writer duo Parmita Borah and Schuyler Ellers (also the narrator), come together to create a brilliant film that not only presents a unique view of the state of Nagaland, but also leaves a burning desire within the viewer to have a taste of this intoxicating land.

The film is produced by Eastern Fare Music Foundation and Jim Ankan. The internet version of the short documentary is released on 22nd July, 2011, and can be viewed on different portals including Dailymotion (www.dailymotion.com/video/xk0fkl) and North-East India page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/northeastindia).

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Glorious sunshine of the summer and the beautiful lush green landscapes surrounding the Avon River welcomed us at Stratford,  Ontario.
All of us are familiar with Mary Poppins and her journey to a beautiful dreamland when she pops and goes inside a painting with some children.  It was the same experience arriving at Stratford which is one of the most beautiful parts of Ontario, nay, the world. I felt as if I also popped into the painting of Stratford.

     “Unofficial ambassadors of Stratford”
    the Swans on Avon river
Arts and theatre have always been my intense passions but after reaching there I realised that this city offered much more than just the theatre which was my prime focus for coming here.

    Tango Cafe & Grill
My first destination was the sprawling Shakespearean Gardens on the river side with beautiful flower beds and gazebos. A bust of Shakespeare in the centre of the garden gives it a distinctive character. From here we walked to the famous ‘Festival Theatre” to watch the “Merry Wives of Windsor” by Shakespeare.  The walk along the river side was most relaxing with feeding the the “unofficial ambassadors of Stratford” the Swans and also the ducks. The feed is available at the information centre of Stratford tourism. Information centre is located right on the corner of the river with all the readily available information about Stratford and its activities.

"Merry Wives of Windsor" was a phenomenal experience not only from the point of view of acting, scripting and direction but also for its unique stage and stagecraft.  “Festival Theatre” happens to be the largest and the oldest one and is built up in the style of an amphitheatre.  Later, on a guided tour of the theatre, of its back stage and the stagecraft, our guide Kathy told us that no single seat in the theatre is a bad seat and the experience is great from every corner of the theatre. Is it not something very special?

A guided tour to the Costume warehouse was indeed a bonus. This gave us an insight and knowledge of one of the largest collections of props and costumes in North America, which are being catalogued now and are stored here.
The second play that we saw was “Grapes of Wrath” at Avon Theatre which is from one of my favourite authors, John Steinbeck.  Experience was again overwhelming and amazing. Again world class stagecraft was on display. Imagine, in one of the scenes a full actual river was on the stage in which characters even dove in. This city is offering some 12 plays this year spread over four theatres and would be on till the end of October.
City was also full of musical evenings in the gardens and on the riverside making our stay even more enjoyable.

Another forth coming high light of Stratford is in September 24 & 25, 2011, which is the award winning 4th annual Stratford Perth County Culinary Festival 2011”.  It would be just an ideal time to visit Stratford during this time. The festival includes a two-day outdoor Farmers and Artisans’ Market, Concerts in the park, an old-fashion Pork Roast, a Beer and Wine Pavilion, Children’s Area, Perth County BBQ’s, Stratford Chefs School Learning Centre, BBQ Blues and Brews on Saturday night, followed by the Savour Stratford Tasting on Sunday. It all happens in Stratford’s historic downtown shopping and garden district.

    The Church Restaurant

Stratford also offers many exotic eating joints catering to every taste and palate. There are two South Asian restaurants, Raja and Taj in down town offering South Asian Cuisine. I had memorable breakfast at Tango Cafe and Foster’s Inn. Foster’s Inn is also a exquisite place to stay and is located right in the heart of down town area and has about nine rooms . My dinner at The Church Restaurant was a unique experience. This restaurant has a huge capacity and also holds shows in the night. Another place that I would love to recommend for dining is “The Parlour”. The helpings are generous and sumptuous. It is one of the oldest in Stratford in a historical building and a favourite of both the visitors and the residents. Ambiance is out of a western saloon which is extremely pleasing. It also is a  2010 winner for overall design for best western hotel in North America. It is an excellent place to stay as well.  Another place I could recommend for dinner is Bijou, the culinary jem of Stratford which is inspired by the neighbourhood bistros of France.
I stayed at Festival Inn. Although it is little away from down town on Ontario Street but the rooms were very comfortable, convenient and stylish. The place had many amenities. I enjoyed a morning swim and dry sauna every day during my stay there before l left for down town for my sightseeing and theatres trips.
Victorian architecture in Stratford of some of the buildings is very fascinating specially the city hall and the Court House. These are visible from far as soon as you enter the city.
There is a chocolate trail in downtown area for all to enjoy and savour the tastes of locally made Chocolate Martini and Chocolate, Mint bath salts  and much more. It has been a huge hit, especially with women!

Every Sunday in front of the City hall ‘Slow Food Perth Country Market’ puts up their stalls for the promotion of locally made food and related items. I had a chance of meeting one of the well known potters Chris Lass of Wild Pottery here. She had showcased some fascinating pieces of pottery which were practical for day to day use as well.
Another thrilling part of this visit was meeting with one of the well known poets of Canada, Charles Mountford and his photographer wife Ruth Mountford and also knowing them personally. The couple lives in Stratford for past 30 years since the time they fell in love with this lovely city for its beauty. Since then this talented couple has contributed a lot to the art and cultural scene of Stratford in many ways.

It seems to me Stratford will become a regular destination for me every year from now on. This is for the revival and nurturing of my spirits. Also I would love to explore this city even more. It is just about 90 minutes away from Toronto by car. Who knows one day I may want to shift here with my bag and baggage and make it my home forever.
