Celebrate the grape harvest in style

Perfect time of year to put Niagara on your travel itinerary

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — As Niagara’s winemakers turn their attention to harvesting the grapes that will become the 2011 vintage, the time is perfect to plan a visit to the picturesque vineyards of the Niagara Peninsula.

The 2011 vintage promises to be a good one, the latest in a run of several strong years that have produced some outstanding award-winning Ontario wines. There is a special ambiance among the vines during harvest time, adding a new dimension to the tourism experience in Niagara.
“Niagara’s wineries are special places, offering excellent wines that are difficult to find anywhere else but at the winery,” said Anthony Annunziata, Vice-President of Marketing at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls and Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa. “Wine tours take you right to the source, hearing directly from the winemaker how to best enjoy particular wines. A visit to a winery puts you in a unique setting, a vineyard backdrop you can only find in a select few places around the world.”
Winery tour packages not only take you to several different wineries to sample some of the wide variety offered in Niagara, but they also save you the worry of having to drive. Bicycle tours are a unique way to travel Niagara’s idyllic rural roads between wineries. Winery visits also enable you to learn how to properly store your wines, when and if they should be aged and what foods they will match best with.
Niagara Falls, one of Canada’s leading tourism destinations, is only a short drive from the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and is the base for many winery tour packages offered through local hotels. It also offers restaurants, shows, concerts, clubs, attractions and casinos, not to mention the Niagara Falls themselves, to add some diversity to your trip.
“Swirling and sipping in a vineyard is a great way to spend your afternoon, but it is really just the beginning of what Niagara has to offer,” says Annunziata. “A chef-prepared dinner using local ingredients is a perfect cap to a day spent among the vines. After dinner, there are literally limitless options available to ensure your is a truly memorable one.”
Niagara also happens to be the home of Ontario’s grape wine harvest celebration. The 60th Niagara Wine Festival, based at historic Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines, features more than 100 events between Sept. 16th and 25th, including winery tours, tastings, concerts, Niagara cuisine, wine seminars, live entertainment and one of the largest street parades in the country.
Admission to the park is free, where wine will be available by the sample, glass or bottle and matched with some of the finest food Niagara has to offer.

Stop to smell the lavender

Aromatherapy awaits in Canada’s parcel of Provence.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-by Giancarlo La Giorgia -

If you’re passing through Québec’s Eastern Townships region this summer, with the wind off Lake Memphremagog blowing just right, you may find your attention drawn by a distant, but distinct, floral perfume. That spritz of sweet-smelling air is Mother Nature’s way of advertising the Bleu Lavande lavender farm, just past the covered bridge in the rural hamlet of Fitch Bay.

Despite the challenge of long, cold winters, owners Pierre Pellerin and Christine Deschesnes defied conventional wisdom – and conquered their own inexperience – to slowly nurture their dream of planting a bit of Provence on 100 acres of land they purchased near the Québec-Vermont border. After a false start in 2002 (the first winter killed off all but 10,000 plants), Bleu Lavande now boasts over 300,000 true lavender plants under cultivation, all grown without chemicals or pesticides, making it the second-biggest operation of its kind in North America.
A farmstead boutique opened in 2004, and there are now many Bleu Lavande shops across the province, including several in the Montreal area. But even if it’s a bit out of the way, there is a lot more in store for visitors to the original location. You’ll find the brand’s full range of lavender-based products, from lotions, soaps and cleaning products, to lavender cooking ingredients, chocolates and honey, as well as candles, linen water and even potted English and Munstead lavender plants (the latter’s petals are edible).
During warm months, there are also lots of unique activities, including guided tours of the farm and distillery offering insight on lavender oil’s calming effects and antiseptic properties, catered picnics featuring local products, and relaxing open-air massages overlooking the tranquil sea of purple blooms. Each summer, there’s also a three-day Lavender Fair, with cooking workshops, live music, painting exhibitions and more.

International arrivals to Canada climbed 2% in June 2011.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-China and India markets show the way as first half of 2011 closes on a high, reports latest CTC Tourism Snapshot.
Almost two million travellers came to Canada in June 2011, a 2% year-on-year increase, says the latest Tourism Snapshot, just published by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.
However, this positive news was slightly offset by the year-to-date total of 6.4 million overnight visitors to this country, a 1% dip on the same period in 2010.
Here’s a breakdown of other key nuggets:

    • The China market has an ever-growing appetite for Canada. It posted the largest gain in overnight arrivals (up 23% on June 2010), and its year-to-date total is up 19%, too.

    • There was more positive news for the thirPublish Postd consecutive month from Mexico: an 8% upturn in overnighters to Canada over the same month last year.

    • The Germany market rebounded after five months of decline with a 10% boost in arrival numbers over June 2010. India (14%), Australia (8%), and France (5%) were other CTC key international overseas markets to report gains in numbers crossing Canadian passport control.

    • Not such happy tidings from Japan: a 30% drop in overnight arrivals to Canada was symptomatic of the ongoing troubles the country is suffering in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami.

    • South Koreans are not travelling to Canada in the same numbers, either: June 2011 witnessed a 12% drop in arrivals, a fifth consecutive monthly fall.

    • Uncle Sam steered 1.4 million Americans to Canada in June 2011, 2% more than in the same month of 2010. They increased their  “other” modes of travel (+10%) and air travel (+4%) though fewer crossed the border by auto (-2%).

    • However, the US year-to-date figures for the first six months of 2011 show a 1% overall decline to 4.6 million overnight trips.

    • Newfoundland and Labrador (38%) and Nova Scotia (25%) were the American provinces of choice for the first half of 2011, whereas Prince Edward Island suffered an 89% tumble.

    • Canadians continue to flock for the travel exit routes: outbound travel in June 2011 hit two million, a 6% year-on-year increase.

    • Canadian consumer confidence trembled again. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, slipped 2.5 points on May ’11 to 83.1.

    • The US is a bundle of nerves, too.The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell to 58.5.

Whitehorse, Yukon Prime Minister Stephen Harper tries on an old hockey glove at the MacBride Museum

EAP Project will promote tourism in Canada’s North
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Haines Junction, yukon – Prime Minister Harper today visited the joint construction site of both the new Kluane National Park Visitor Centre and of the Dä Kų Cultural Centre. Both centres are located just outside Kluane National Park on traditional Champagne and Aishihik First Nations land. The Prime Minister was joined by Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, and Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski, as well as Member of Parliament Ryan Leef, and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) Chief James Allen.

“Canadians who visit Kluane will fully enjoy the natural beauty that our country has to offer and will be able to learn more about our remarkable First Nations’ heritage,” said the Prime Minister. “The two new centres being built near spectacular Kluane National Park will give a boost to the local economy through new jobs and tourism revenues.” The visitor centre, which will be housed within the cultural centre, will offer Canadians and international tourists insight into the park’s natural and cultural history, information on hiking and other activities, and allow visitors to experience the rich history and culture of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

The Government of Canada supported the new visitor centre through the Economic Action Plan’s Improving Parks Canada’s National Historic Sites and Visitor Facilities program. Parks Canada will lease the space for the visitor centre from the CAFN. The Dä Kų Cultural Centre will be used as a community gathering place for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people – a place where they can celebrate their culture, traditions, languages and arts, and share the wisdom of their Elders with others, including park visitors. The Government of Canada contributed to the construction of the cultural centre under Infrastructure Canada’s Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

“Nagaland - Journey through the choir of clouds” – a short documentary

Mon, Nagaland (a still from the documentary)
A short travel documentary by Jim Ankan Deka showcasing the grandeur enchanting land of Nagaland, a hill state of India, mixed with its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant culture.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Jul 22, 2011 - Nagaland, a state in the remote north eastern part of India, continues to remain an alluring mystery to all those who ever saw, heard or even remotely experienced a whiff of it. In spite of the growing rate of tourists and travellers flocking to this region, there are certain aspects of the people and life here that continue to be shrouded in an age old enigma. The grandeur of this enchanting land mixed with its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant culture and enthralling history is precisely what Jim Ankan Deka brilliantly showcases in his documentary “Nagaland-Journey through the choir of clouds”.
“Nagaland - A place where swirling clouds gently kiss the mighty hills, where nature preserves in its bosom the primeval traditions of the land, where picturesque sights await at every blink, where ethnic notes conflate with temporary melodies....” As these words make their way to the heart of the viewer, an overwhelming sense of wonder and reverence permeates the soul, and one cannot help but agree that an enlightening and profound impression is what comes across through the documentary, as it highlights the tribal life, culture, myths and folklore of Nagaland. Imbued with the pristine sounds and moods of nature; beliefs, customs and social behaviour of the Naga people, “Nagaland-journey through the choir of clouds”, with its freshness and simplicity has a fragrance of the primeval and ethnic combined with the contemporary about it. A deep sense of sensitivity can be deciphered in the way it depicts the life and history of Nagaland and its people, the hospitality and warmth of the people that comes so naturally to them, the age old myths and folklore passed on from generation to generation, and an amalgamation of the past and the present harmoniously co existing.

A sense of travelling back in time engulfs one, as the documentary takes us on a journey through the districts of Nagaland encompassing the serene life of the people and filling one with a sense of detachment from the chaos and humdrum of modern civilization. The documentary comes across as a landmark in itself as it explores an all embracing picture of a region, its people and their story. The director manages to have several scenes that give a glimpse into the core of Naga society with its myriad tribes and the remnants of the early animist culture and ancient traditions existing parallel to the contemporary life of the new generation. The entire team, including the script writer duo Parmita Borah and Schuyler Ellers (also the narrator), come together to create a brilliant film that not only presents a unique view of the state of Nagaland, but also leaves a burning desire within the viewer to have a taste of this intoxicating land.

The film is produced by Eastern Fare Music Foundation and Jim Ankan. The internet version of the short documentary is released on 22nd July, 2011, and can be viewed on different portals including Dailymotion (www.dailymotion.com/video/xk0fkl) and North-East India page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/northeastindia).

Yogic Practices & Emergence of Yoga

Yoga bases its origin in the premedical times in the Indian Mythology and subsequently in the Indian civilization.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Yoga bases its origin in the premedical times in the Indian Mythology and subsequently in the Indian civilization. It can be summarized as a set of instructions formulated and improvised over ages to give it today’s form. Yoga has now found its place even in the English dictionary which means that it has followers across the globe and has attained global heights. True blue followers include the who’s who in Hollywood like Julia Roberts to President Obama. In India, a lot of holy men are preaching it to give it a national flavour as well. In India, organisations like the Patanjali and Government initiatives of Ayush (a movement to support Yoga/Ayurveda) have helped it to reach common man as well.

Yoga entails various traditional disciplines that are aimed at the harmonious development of body, mind and the soul. It is a methodical way of attaining perfection through various meditative practices and the continuous control of various elements of human nature (both physical and psychological). Inner perfection is gradually attained through continuous transformational yogic practices. With yoga one can improve vigour, vitality, various health conditions as well as increase longevity.

When we state the above, the scientifically proven methods of the postures (also known as Assanas in Yoga, India) allow physical condition to improve with improved blood circulation and muscular strength. There are different kinds of Asanas - generic as well as specific. The generic Asanas will cover the holistic view, where as the specific ones can be used for curing and improving various anamolies relating to blood circulation to a specific part in the body.

From its early days, (http://www.vacationstoindia.com/india-journeys/yoga-and- ...)Yoga India has been strongly associated with Ayurveda as the two combined to give a home grown wellness centre for the body and the mind. Ayurveda is also finding its righteous place in the world as more and more people are looking for alternatives to modern day medicine which is laced with side effects and harmful toxins. On the other hand the duo can give a perspective life of well being. In fact many preachers would like to sell them together as they both complement each other well in terms of therapies and diagnosis.

Yogic Asanas have a close relation with meditation as it is described as a state of mind where you can be free from diversions and obstructions. In fact some of the yogic postures are so difficult that once you master them, the whole mind is focused on diverting your attention on them and the endurance it takes. A combination of practise of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda is supposed to pave way for a life of abstinence and that has perhaps become the lifestyle of Indian sages who practise the three together in the Himalayas.
