Are you minding your mind?

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Are you minding your mind?
We all are running I guess faster than the clock. And so are our life and our health running behind us, making every effort to ask us whether we want any break?? Is our life SO busy? Don't we deserve such breaks to refresh our life? Our laptops and computers seem to be luckier than us, at least they have a refresh button and a shut down
    option!!

Let’s get this simple: Are you taking good care of YOUR Mental Health?
Most of us would choose to spontaneously nod i acceptance and prepare huge sentences
to answer this question. They would say:
    1. "Yes, when my spouse is mad at me, I pull back and thus, end fights.”
    2. “I simply neglect when my teenager arrogantly back answers and yells at me.”
    3. “Things aren’t going well in my marriage so I decide to stay back long in the
office. It is easier that way.”
    4. “My friends aren’t in touch with me any more but I guess I am fine alone.”
    5. “My colleague is getting nasty these days but I prefer ignoring rather than getting
into discussions and then probably conflicts.”
Above any many more such explanations isn’t what you should be answering………
    Stop ‘Blindly Breathing’:
    1. Do not emotionally mask 24/7. It is suppression of your real emotion and
expression of unreal emotion which others wish to see on you.
    2. Do not over-pamper your ego; it is moving you in the opposite direction of the
    world.
    3. Do not self-pity; it makes you weaker and vulnerable. Empathy is a better word
instead of sympathy for your own self.
    4. Be friends with ‘ifs and buts’ of your life.
    5. Stop denying- Your truth my truth can be different!
    6. Every emotion can be expressed in a positive way at the right place, right time
    and to the right person.
    7. Do not say “I am OK” when you are not OK.
    8. Stop denying that every human comes with their own blacks and whites and so do
    you too.
    9. Avoid negative self-talk. Eg. Why ME?, No matter what I do, failure will fall in
my pocket, I hate myself, I don’t like these things in myself, Nobody ever
understands me, I am sick of myself etc
    10. Stop saying ‘NO’ to yourself when you rightly deserve a ‘YES’ to it.
    Start ‘Living Life’:
    1. Give 5 compliments to yourself daily.
    2. Smile, kiss and say “I love you” to yourself while you are grooming/ dressing up/
shaving in front of the mirror. It is not crazy!!
    3. Have your ‘My Time’ daily for 15 minutes. Use this time to do anything that
YOU like, be just yourself, become comfortable and complete with yourself.
    4. Take regular breaks and introspect: Eg: Are you happy? Where are you taking
    your life?
    5. Love yourself unconditionally. Say ‘No’ to have checklists for you to accept your
    own self.
    6. Feel proud of whatever you are today. Say: “Hey, I am unique!”
    7. Learn to balance: Individual U, Family U, and Social U!
    8. Respect every ‘I’, ‘U’ and ‘WE’.
    9. Create happy moments for yourself, don’t wait and expect others to do it for you
    all the time.
    10. Celebrate life as it comes just once!

Stop to smell the lavender

Aromatherapy awaits in Canada’s parcel of Provence.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-by Giancarlo La Giorgia -

If you’re passing through Québec’s Eastern Townships region this summer, with the wind off Lake Memphremagog blowing just right, you may find your attention drawn by a distant, but distinct, floral perfume. That spritz of sweet-smelling air is Mother Nature’s way of advertising the Bleu Lavande lavender farm, just past the covered bridge in the rural hamlet of Fitch Bay.

Despite the challenge of long, cold winters, owners Pierre Pellerin and Christine Deschesnes defied conventional wisdom – and conquered their own inexperience – to slowly nurture their dream of planting a bit of Provence on 100 acres of land they purchased near the Québec-Vermont border. After a false start in 2002 (the first winter killed off all but 10,000 plants), Bleu Lavande now boasts over 300,000 true lavender plants under cultivation, all grown without chemicals or pesticides, making it the second-biggest operation of its kind in North America.
A farmstead boutique opened in 2004, and there are now many Bleu Lavande shops across the province, including several in the Montreal area. But even if it’s a bit out of the way, there is a lot more in store for visitors to the original location. You’ll find the brand’s full range of lavender-based products, from lotions, soaps and cleaning products, to lavender cooking ingredients, chocolates and honey, as well as candles, linen water and even potted English and Munstead lavender plants (the latter’s petals are edible).
During warm months, there are also lots of unique activities, including guided tours of the farm and distillery offering insight on lavender oil’s calming effects and antiseptic properties, catered picnics featuring local products, and relaxing open-air massages overlooking the tranquil sea of purple blooms. Each summer, there’s also a three-day Lavender Fair, with cooking workshops, live music, painting exhibitions and more.

Self-Hunt- I, Me, Myself!

    StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-

    Shweta Nagpurkar Saxena.

    Accredited Trainer/
    Corporate Psychologist
Hi friends, today we will try and understand how important it is to meet Ourselves……Daily!!! If I ask you to explain your role as a son/ wife/ grandparent or as a corporate professional……..oh ho…..I am sure you have already started answering this in your mind…..isn’t it? And now if I ask you to define Yourself as a Human……just Mr./ Ms.……and most of you will be stuck on what to answer and how? Well, that is exactly how we all have conditioned our mind and have happily got accustomed to live this way. We have conveniently or sub-consciously ignored the fact that in all the roles of our life…..We are missing our own self; we have walked so far away from ourselves that now going back seems stressful, we are missing on taking a break and introspecting about ourselves and thereby, going away and at times lose touch with ourselves. Rightly said, late is better than never! So let us begin our journey of Self-Hunt:
    1. Introspect and find out,
A] When was it that you met yourself the last time?
B] When was it last when you felt being with yourself?
    2. Do you consistently manage and enjoy your ‘Me’ time?
    3. How well and completely have you accepted yourself?
    4. Are you aware of the top 5 things that give you unconditional happiness?
    5. How frequently you compliment yourself? And pat your own back?
    6. How often do you enjoy hearing your own laughter?
    7. Do you enjoy grooming?
    8. How do you take care of your self-esteem?
    9. Which are the 5 regular things you have on your to-do-list to de-stress yourself?
    10. Do you actually take a break and enjoy your pleasant mood/ emotions?
    11. Which 2 things motivate you the most? How often you practice them?
    12. Are you able to confess to and forgive yourself?
    13. How often do you cross-check your Self-Talk with regard to optimism?
    14. Is your life breathing as you want it to?
    15. When was the last time you said “I love you” to yourself?
The reason we need to do this is that we are aware of missing ourselves and yet again we keep postponing this hunt for self. At the end of each day most of us spend at least some time in repenting of not being able to enjoy their current life, thinking this is not what they had expected themselves to be, are over-sacrificing in the other related roles, complaining that life is getting too demanding but is not giving them much in return and so on. What you will sow in your mind, same will you reap in the form of thoughts, personality traits, emotions, attitude and behavior. Thus, this is the right time to wake up and deal with our incompletion about self. Many times we expect self-definition, happiness and self-satisfaction to come to us from the outer world but the undeniable fact is it has to start and continue coming from within us. This was a small exercise to help you find and come closer to yourself, thus, make sure you answer all the above question……..after all what completes our identity is a world of I, Me,
    Myself!!!
    Thank You!

Yogic Practices & Emergence of Yoga

Yoga bases its origin in the premedical times in the Indian Mythology and subsequently in the Indian civilization.
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Yoga bases its origin in the premedical times in the Indian Mythology and subsequently in the Indian civilization. It can be summarized as a set of instructions formulated and improvised over ages to give it today’s form. Yoga has now found its place even in the English dictionary which means that it has followers across the globe and has attained global heights. True blue followers include the who’s who in Hollywood like Julia Roberts to President Obama. In India, a lot of holy men are preaching it to give it a national flavour as well. In India, organisations like the Patanjali and Government initiatives of Ayush (a movement to support Yoga/Ayurveda) have helped it to reach common man as well.

Yoga entails various traditional disciplines that are aimed at the harmonious development of body, mind and the soul. It is a methodical way of attaining perfection through various meditative practices and the continuous control of various elements of human nature (both physical and psychological). Inner perfection is gradually attained through continuous transformational yogic practices. With yoga one can improve vigour, vitality, various health conditions as well as increase longevity.

When we state the above, the scientifically proven methods of the postures (also known as Assanas in Yoga, India) allow physical condition to improve with improved blood circulation and muscular strength. There are different kinds of Asanas - generic as well as specific. The generic Asanas will cover the holistic view, where as the specific ones can be used for curing and improving various anamolies relating to blood circulation to a specific part in the body.

From its early days, (http://www.vacationstoindia.com/india-journeys/yoga-and- ...)Yoga India has been strongly associated with Ayurveda as the two combined to give a home grown wellness centre for the body and the mind. Ayurveda is also finding its righteous place in the world as more and more people are looking for alternatives to modern day medicine which is laced with side effects and harmful toxins. On the other hand the duo can give a perspective life of well being. In fact many preachers would like to sell them together as they both complement each other well in terms of therapies and diagnosis.

Yogic Asanas have a close relation with meditation as it is described as a state of mind where you can be free from diversions and obstructions. In fact some of the yogic postures are so difficult that once you master them, the whole mind is focused on diverting your attention on them and the endurance it takes. A combination of practise of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda is supposed to pave way for a life of abstinence and that has perhaps become the lifestyle of Indian sages who practise the three together in the Himalayas.

HARPER GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FUNDING TO SUPPORT POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS CANADA

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, today announced funding for ten innovative, community-based projects to improve the mental health of Canadian children, youth and families across the country.

“We know that the early years of a person’s development can have a lasting impact on their mental health,” said Minister Aglukkaq.  “As a parent, I know that children can be greatly influenced by their home and school environments. And that’s why it’s important to focus on educating parents, families and educators on how to create the best conditions for the good mental health of our kids.”

The Government of Canada is providing over $27 million through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Innovation Strategy to support projects that focus on fostering optimal mental health for children, youth and families in rural and northern communities, aboriginal communities, and those of low socio-economic status.

The projects address issues such as bullying, change and loss, substance abuse and suicide, and seek to strengthen family and community interactions and promote healthy relationships. The knowledge gained from these projects can also be shared with stakeholders in mental health promotion across the country and help shape future projects and programs.

The site of today’s announcement, the Hincks–Dellcrest Centre, is receiving more than $2.6 million to implement and test a Canadian-based training program for parents and caregivers called Handle with Care. Based out of Toronto, the project will involve 400 participants in 16 communities in Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba and the Yukon.

“We are extremely pleased to have received this funding,” said Nancy Cohen, Director of Research at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre.  “Supporting projects like Handle with Care helps families living in at risk communities get the support they need and helps those communities create the conditions that promote positive mental health.”

Through the Declaration on Prevention and Promotion, Canada’s Ministers of Health have agreed to make health promotion a priority for action. The Government of Canada is committed to working with partners—within and outside the health sector—to design and implement new approaches to promote the health and well-being of Canada’s children and youth.

Government of Canada Supports World-Leading Health Research To Benefit Canadians

StarBuzz Weekly, TORONTO, ONTARIO - (June 9, 2011) - The Government of Canada will provide funding for research to develop new treatments for lung, breast and ovarian cancers, as well as other life-threatening diseases. Speaking at the University of Toronto, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced that 17 universities will receive funding for state-of-the-art research that will lead to direct health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, and economic development in health-related areas.
"Our government supports health research because it improves the lives of Canadians," said Minister Goodyear. "These investments will bring together world-leading scientists to seek solutions to important health care problems, and lead to new treatments and technologies that will help patients across the country and around the world."

Today's announcement of $15 million in funding is provided through the Collaborative Health Research Projects program—a partnership between the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Collaborative Health Research Projects grants are designed to assist new projects that involve interdisciplinary collaborations between any field of the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences.
The University of Toronto will receive over $3.2 million for seven research projects that will explore areas such as innovative cancer diagnosis and treatments, the development of low-cost devices capable of detecting infectious diseases, and furthering regenerative medicine studies.
"The Collaborative Health Research Projects program supports interdisciplinary research that is focussed on finding innovative solutions to challenges in health-related fields. Being at the forefront of discovery and innovation, there is no doubt that the impact of this research will be felt here in Canada and across the world," said Suzanne Fortier, President of NSERC.
The grant recipients from 17 universities were selected following a peer review competition. Each recipient will receive between $150,000 and $690,000 over three years. Among the projects funded by the Collaborative Health Research Projects program are developments for a bioengineered cell delivery system to help repair spinal cord injury; risk factors and an optimization model for breast cancer screening; a new intelligent, mobile device for the diagnosis and management of respiratory disease; and the development of new technologies to assess long-term exposures of the Canadian population to air pollution.
"This interface with NSERC is one of the frontiers of the health sciences," said Dr. Alain Beaudet, President of CIHR. "The Collaborative Health Research Projects brings scientific and engineering disciplines into the realm of health research to develop innovative technologies that are at the forefront of health care, including medical devices, robotics, and imaging. The Collaborative Health Research Projects program has a huge impact on the application of health care and is a Canadian commercialization success story."
NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. It supports some 30,000 post-secondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding more than 12,000 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 1,500 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is the Government of Canada's agency for health research. CIHR's mission is to create new scientific knowledge and to enable its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health-care system. Composed of 13 Institutes, the agency provides leadership and support to more than 13,600 health researchers and trainees across Canada.
More information on the Collaborative Health Research Projects program is available in the backgrounder.
BackgrounderCollaborative Health Research Projects ProgramThe Collaborative Health Research Projects Program supports collaborative research projects involving any field of the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences. The Collaborative Health Research Projects Program is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
The Collaborative Health Research Projects Program supports original research that will lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, or economic development in health-related areas. Projects may range from fundamental knowledge creation to research on knowledge application that is relevant to industry or public policy.
Collaborative Health Research Projects grants are designed to assist new projects that involve interdisciplinary collaborations that will have an impact on the health of Canadians. In 2011, the 34 recipients received an average grant of approximately $150,000 per year, for up to three years, for defined projects with clear milestones and decision points.
The objectives of the Collaborative Health Research Projects Program are to:
           translate research results to end users and stakeholders;
           encourage the NSERC and CIHR communities to collaborate and integrate their expertise in their novel research activities;
advance interdisciplinary research leading to knowledge and technologies useful for improving the health of Canadians; and
train highly qualified personnel in collaborative and interdisciplinary research relevant to health.
Starting in the next competition, the active participation and support of a non-academic knowledge/technology user organization will be required to apply to this program. The knowledge/technology user must be an organization with the potential to use the knowledge generated through the research and apply it to new health-related products, policies, programs and/or practices outside the research setting.
The participation of two or more independent researchers with complementary expertise is required. Team composition must include expertise in the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences. New collaborations between researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and medical researchers, clinicians, social scientists and humanists are strongly encouraged. Collaborators from other sectors (e.g., government and industry) and foreign researchers are welcome to participate, but are expected to bring their own resources to the project.
