Harper Government takes action with tough new warning messages for tobacco products

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-September 27, 2011-OTTAWA – The Harper Government gave final approval for tough new warning labels on cigarettes and little cigar packages, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today. Tobacco manufacturers and importers have been given until March 21, 2012 to transition to the new labels, while retailers will have until June 19, 2012 to ensure all packages on their shelves feature these new labels.  



“Our Government has followed through on its commitment to introduce new, stronger labelling requirements on key tobacco products,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “The new Tobacco Act regulations will put new, updated health warnings and information into the hands of millions of smokers.”

The new health warnings are part of new Tobacco Act regulations, now in force, that set out new labelling requirements for cigarettes and little cigars.


"The messages introduced today reflect recent research on the health hazards associated with tobacco use and the benefits of quitting," said Minister Blaney. "This is an important initiative for the health of Canadians."

The new health warnings feature, for the first time, compelling stories from people affected by tobacco use, such as the late anti-smoking activist Barb Tarbox. Two of the messages feature images of Ms. Tarbox, taken while she was dying of lung cancer. Pat Tarbox, her husband at the time, and Mackenzie Tarbox, their daughter, joined Minister Aglukkaq for the announcement.

“I applaud the courage and commitment of those who are sharing their experience with tobacco use through these messages,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “I’m especially proud to welcome the family of Ms. Tarbox. Her unforgettable image has become a symbol of the hazards of smoking.”
                                                                                                                


“The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada commends Minister Aglukkaq on this important initiative aimed at reducing death and disability caused by tobacco industry products, including heart disease and stroke, and other chronic diseases," says Bobbe Wood, President, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. "We've learned that when it comes to tobacco control, we must be comprehensive — a key component of this approach includes strong, graphic and prominent warnings on tobacco packaging."
The regulations will be published soon in Canada Gazette, Part II.  Also now in force are new regulations prohibiting the terms “light” and “mild”, and variations thereof, on cigarettes, little cigars and various other tobacco products and accessories.

Americans have to look at Spain and see just how the Spanish debt, like the American structural deficit, because of reckless government spending policies on borrowed money has skyrocketed. Economists for a few years have urged Spain and now America to embrace austerity measures without much political success from either country.

Both countries continue following previous wasteful government spending on borrowed money for similar failed ideologies for a green energy economic policy. Spain now has an official unemployment rate of 22%.

Obama’s stimulus 1 resulted in the loss of 2.4 Million American jobs and a  combined loss of over 6 Million Americans being out of work, lost a job or not even looking for a job thanks to his administration’s failed policies of progressive socialized liberalism.

His stimulus 2, at a cost of an additional half a Billion dollars, just more  recycled failed ideas of smoke and mirror rhetoric for hope and change from Keynesian and Marxists economic philosophies and theories based on his stimulus 1 at a cost of close to $1 Trillion dollars of borrowed money.

From the very beginning, of his campaign for the position of President and without having any executive or management skills and relying on his political experience as a congressman and union community organizer, Obama could not answer questions over and above his pay scale or grade, as he himself admitted.

Unfortunately the progressive liberal left leaning extremism ideologies of main stream media because of their biased support of democrats never openly, transparently or honestly vetted Obama’s background as a candidate or his experience, economic theories, political philosophies, work history as a union community organizer or complete lack of creating jobs in the private sector free market system during his campaign for the position of President.

This junior Obama administration has mishandled the American economy, based on his support for the Marxist political ideologies and failed Keynesian economic theories for radically and fundamentally changing rules and regulations of a free market enterprise system on a daily basis that continues a financial crisis which shall make every American citizen and the next generation of American youth permanently poorer.

Markham ~ September 22, 2011 ~ On September 24, 2011, during Markham’s annual Applefest weekend, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Councillor Carolina Moretti, Members of Markham Council and Paul Calandra, M.P. for Oak Ridges-Markham will officially open to the public the Markham Museum’s new $9-milllion, 17,000 square foot LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold standard Collections Building. It is one of the first in Canada built to these standards and is a benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance “green” buildings.




This new facility was made possible with funding support from Markham and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage. It is a significant investment in culture in Markham and will strengthen the Museum’s role as a major regional attraction.

Canadian Representation at United Nations General Assembly

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-(No. 269 - September 19, 2011 - 5:15 p.m. ET) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will travel to New York City from September 20 to 27, 2011 to attend a series of high-level discussions on a wide range of global issues during the 66th United Nations General Assembly.

Minister Baird will accompany Prime Minister Stephen Harper to a high-level meeting on Libya on September 20. He will also represent Canada at high-level meetings to address a series of other global issues and conduct a number of valuable bilateral meetings with his global counterparts. Creating Jobs and growth: The focus of our Government in the upcoming session of parliament

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Date: September 19, 2011 OTTAWA - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Government House Leader, today outlined the Government of Canada’s legislative priorities for the fall parliamentary session of the House of Commons.

“Canadians gave us a strong mandate to continue implementing measures from the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  This will include important measures like a tax break for new job creation,” said Minister Van Loan.

“With the global economy still fragile, Canadians can expect us to focus on creating more jobs and economic growth.” The Government will introduce a bill to implement the remaining measures included in the 2011 budget, the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan: a Low Tax Plan for Jobs and Growth.  These measures will help Canada’s economic recovery, which has so far seen over 600,000 net new jobs created since July 2009. In addition to the Budget Implementation Act, our Government will continue to move forward on its ambitious trade agenda by reintroducing legislation to implement free trade agreements. These will create opportunities for Canadian businesses and jobs for Canadian workers.

“In this fragile global economic climate, our Government needs to keep creating new jobs and protecting existing jobs through open and increased trade”, said Minister Van Loan. “Our Government is committed to strengthening Canada’s existing trading relationships while pursuing new ones.” He also said the Government will move forward with legislation that will: ·        
Keep our communities and neighbourhood’s safe.·        
Improve our democratic system by moving closer to the principle that every vote cast should be of equal value.·        
Eliminate the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry.·        
Prevent human smugglers from abusing Canada’s immigration system.  “Canadians expect us to back up our commitments with action,” said Minister Van Loan.  “That is exactly what our Government will be doing – keeping our commitments and staying focused on the economy.”

Paying Tribute to Those Who Lost Their Lives on 9/11

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Brampton-Springdale – Today, we as Canadians need to come together to pay tribute to the thousands of lives lost during the cowardly and horrific terrorist attacks that occurred ten years ago today. This is a moment when we must pay tribute to the victims of these violent actions, their families and their loved ones. It is also an opportunity to honour the members of the military, law enforcement and emergency services who served in the brave rescue efforts.




“9/11 marks a sad day for our world. We must remember those who perished, those who selflessly gave their lives to help others and we must thank those who continue to fight all forms of terrorism here in Canada and abroad,” said Parm Gill, Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale.


Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced that September 11^th will be recognized as the National Service Day. This is a fitting tribute to all those affected by these heinous acts of terrorism. Although September 11^th is a day scarred by terror, sorrow and grief, we must now turn this day into one of hope, generosity and courage.


“Along with our friends, allies and neighbours, our Government is focused on standing up against any threat of terrorism and hatred,” said Parm Gill. “We will work tirelessly and courageously for a more peaceful future that we all deserve.”


We must also recall the incredible acts of courage, sacrifice and generosity by Canadians on the day of 9/11 and the months following the attacks. “Ten years ago, the September 11th terrorist attacks shook the world. And as we extend our thoughts and sympathies to those families affected by this senseless attack, including the families of the Canadian victims, we also remember the strength, compassion and resolve exemplified by Canadians across the country as we responded to this disaster.



We remember the empathy, love and support that poured out from the more than 100,000 people who gathered on Parliament Hill for a national day of mourning.

We remember the professionalism and sense of duty of Canadian air traffic controllers and airport staff, who without hesitation welcomed the 33,000 passengers affected when American airspace was forced to close.

We remember the overwhelming hospitality shown by Canadians aiding those stranded passengers. Stories are still being told of the generosity and warmth of communities such as those in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Terrorism - the deliberate use of violence against a civilian population for a political goal - must always be countered with strong and smart policing strategies, efforts at prevention, effective and strategic intervention by security forces where necessary and a continuing dialogue between faiths and communities, both at home and abroad. Our common enemy is extremist violence, fuelled by ideologies that preach hatred.

Our thoughts are always with the victims of this tragedy and our efforts are in their honour.”

“On this tenth anniversary of 9/11, we honour the nearly three thousand innocent people from 90 countries who lost their lives in the attacks and pay respect to their family and friends who still suffer with the losses of that horrible tragedy.

“It is equally important to recall the incredible acts of courage, sacrifice and kindness by Canadians on and following that infamous day – acts like a community of 10,000 in Gander hosting several thousand diverted air passengers and treating them like part of their families; the selfless service of civilian and military volunteers who continue to stand up in the face of terrorism; and the outpouring of Canadian support in the aftermath of the attacks.

“I hope that this National Day of Service, observed hereafter on September 11, will inspire Canadians to once more show the same kind of compassion to strangers in need, by engaging on that day in charitable activities, fundraisers and community service for worthy causes across the country. “It is a fitting way to pay tribute to the Canadians and others who were lost in 9/11, to show continued support for the families of victims, to honour the sacrifices made by those who served in the rescue efforts, and to turn an infamous date into a day of hope marked by a communal outpouring of warmth and generosity.”

In a move that Rob Ford's critics are calling anti-democratic and an attack on free speech, the city is attempting to stop the Mass Meeting to Stop Ford’s Cuts from taking place. They are shutting down Dufferin Grove Park, where the meeting is scheduled from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday, September 10. Organizers from the Toronto Stop the Cuts Network say they are expecting thousands of residents to attend, to write a Toronto Declaration,  ‘a vision for the Toronto people need and deserve’.


The city has cancelled all programming at Dufferin Grove Park for the day. There will be none of the usual services at this busy park on a Saturday - no gardening, no food cart, no water around the playground. “Shutting down Dufferin Grove Park is an attempt to drive a wedge between Toronto Stop the Cuts and community members who rely on park services”, says Yogi Acharya, a member of Stop the Cuts. “It is also intended to prevent park staff, unionized with CUPE local 79, from participating in or helping with this meeting.”

“These heavy handed tactics against the most democratic of things – a meeting in a public park – shows that Ford and many in City Hall have no respect for Torontonians who disagree with their agenda”, says event
organizer Constanza Farias. “The message is clear: if you do not support the gutting of city services and the privatization of everything that isn’t nailed down, you have no rights here in Ford Nation”

Toronto Stop the Cuts Network is moving ahead with this meeting and urging more people to come out. “We were expecting nearly 2,000 people at first, but after this ridiculous move, I am sure more people are going to show up.” says Toronto Stop the Cuts Network member Jessica Lyons. “This is a pathetic attempt to thwart a movement that can’t be stopped. It shows their weakness and desperation. Ford obviously does not believe in democracy, but the people of Toronto will stand up to this bully”.

Prime Minister Harper to visit NEW YORK CITY on 10th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that he will travel to New York City to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
“On this day, we will pay tribute to Canadians, Americans and all those who lost their lives nearly 10 years ago in these heinous attacks,” said the Prime Minister.


“As we pay tribute to the victims and their loved ones, we also honour members of the military, law enforcement and intelligence personnel who continue to fight on the front lines against all forms of terrorism.”

On September 10, Prime Minister Harper will travel to New York City to attend a private reception for Canadian victims’ families to show his support for those affected by the senseless and tragic attacks. On September 11, Prime Minister Harper will commemorate the Canadian victims of the 9/11 terror attacks at a memorial at the British Garden in New York City.

“Together with our friends and allies, our Government will continue to stand firm against the threat of global terrorism. We will remain vigilant and work relentlessly in the hope of a more secure and peaceful future,” added Prime Minister Harper.

The foreign worker affirmative action scheme will mean that more than 550,000 Ontario job seekers will find it harder and harder to find good paying jobs thanks to Dalton McGuinty.

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA TO HIS NATIONAL CAUCUS

“We’ve been talking with voters about their priorities and concerns, and with all Canadians about our Government’s plan for tax relief to create jobs and growth.



 “While I hope you got some downtime with your families, I know we’ve all stayed focused on the economy.

“Canada continues to do well relative to most other advanced economies. “Since July 2009, the Canadian economy has created nearly 600,000 net new jobs.

 “But, unfortunately, as we have been reminded this summer, the global economy remains fragile.

“This is a fact to which I have made repeated reference, and which has informed our decisions all along.

“And so as Parliament resumes this fall, our Government will continue taking action to protect the financial security of hard-working Canadians and to help create jobs now and for the years to come.

“Friends, in managing the economy, circumstances demand that we will listen carefully to Canadians and that we be flexible when necessary.

“At the same time, as we have always done, we will work prudently and responsibly, acting on the clear and strong mandate we received from Canadians. “Our first priority is to move our economic recovery forward, and ensure Canada’s economy continues to create jobs.

“As provided for in our Budget, the next phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan will continue helping seniors, students, new Canadians, older workers and businesses trying to avoid layoffs.

Report Citizenship Fraud Via New Tip Line

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Government of Canada is offering a new tip line through the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre where tips on suspected citizenship fraud cases may be reported, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today.

"Canadian citizenship is not for sale. I encourage anyone who has information regarding citizenship fraud to call our tip line," said Minister Kenney. "My department will ensure that all tips are investigated and that appropriate action is taken.



"Cases involving false representation, fraud or knowingly concealing material circumstances in the citizenship process – for example, pretending to be present in Canada to meet the residence requirements for obtaining citizenship – should be referred to the citizenship fraud tip line at CIC's Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100 (in Canada only, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday). Those overseas can contact the nearest Canadian visa office. Tips may also be reported by e-mail at Citizenship-fraud-tips@cic.gc.ca. All other types of fraud tips related to immigration should be reported to the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) Border Watch Tip Line at 1-888-502-9060.

The CBSA is responsible for enforcing the provisions of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.To date, CIC has identified approximately 2,000 people from over 100 countries who may have obtained Canadian citizenship fraudulently, many by using the services of crooked consultants to misrepresent their residence in Canada.
