StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-OTTAWA - Today, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Government House Leader, Senator Claude Carignan, Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate, summarized the legislative accomplishments of the spring parliamentary session. “Canadians gave us a strong mandate to secure our economic recovery and continue to promote job growth," said Minister Van Loan.
"Our Government has passed both the Next Phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan, and an increase to the Guaranteed Income Supplement for seniors. We have also taken action to protect our economy by introducing legislation to put an end to work stoppages.” “Our Government is hard at work on the priorities of Canadians,” said Senator Carignan.
“We are working to ensure speedy passage of this important legislation through the Senate. We will continue to get results for Canadians.” By the end of this session, the list of measures passed by the House will include: the Next Phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan;·
The Supporting Vulnerable Seniors and Protecting Canada's Economic Recovery Act;·
an extension of Canada's involvement in the United Nations-sanctioned, NATO-led mission in Libya·
The Fair and Efficient Criminal Trials Act – also known as Megatrials legislation; and, the main and supplementary estimates for the services the Government delivers to Canadians We have also introduced other key pieces of legislation, including: ·
The Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada's Immigration System Act;·
The Senate Reform Act; ·
The Restoring Mail Delivery for Canadians Act; and ·
The Continuing Air Service for Passengers Act For the upcoming Fall parliamentary session, our Government will move forward quickly with legislation on additional priorities, including legislation to scrap once and for all the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry which needlessly and unfairly targets law-abiding Canadians while doing nothing to reduce crime, as well as legislation to strengthen our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
