Ottawa, June 20, 2011 — A new exhibit and a YouTube video illustrating some of the hardships faced by refugees, and what Canada is doing to help, were launched today by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney to mark World Refugee Day.“I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of former refugees across Canada,” said Minister Kenney. “I’ve seen first-hand how they bring their hopes and dreams to Canada and enrich our society. Since World War II, Canadians have provided refuge to over one million refugees, and Canada’s commitment to refugee protection remains strong. As a Canadian, I am proud of our long history of helping those in need.”Canada’s history of helping people in need can be traced back to the 18th century when, in 1789, Lord Dorchester, Governor-in-Chief of British North America, gave official recognition to the “First Loyalists” — those loyal to the Crown who fled the oppression of the American Revolution to settle in Nova Scotia and Quebec.
“Internationally, the number of refugees has increased due to conflict and violent abuse of their human rights. We must continue to work to assist those whose lives and safety are threatened,” said Minister Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation. “We must continue to help refugees meet their basic needs and find safety and security while supporting all efforts so that they can return to their homes. The most vulnerable—women and children—face even greater threats, even in refugee camps. We must increase our work to prevent this unacceptable exploitation.”Last year alone, Canada resettled more than 12,000 refugees from abroad and more than 12,300 people were granted protection in Canada as refugees through the Asylum Program. And Canada is doing more to help.
As part of the measures to reform Canada’s refugee protection system, the Government of Canada is increasing the total number of refugees resettled each year by 20 percent. This means that up to 500 more government-assisted refugees and 2,000 privately sponsored refugees will find protection in Canada.“I also want to highlight the important role that private sponsors play in helping to bring refugees to Canada,” Minister Kenney added. “In sponsoring refugees to begin a new life here in Canada, these sponsor groups help to ensure a better life of freedom and opportunity for individual refugees and, at the same time, they help to build stronger communities and fulfil the promise of Canada – the most welcoming nation in the world.” To view the new refugee video, “Canada Reaches Out,” visit the CIC website or go toYouTube. For more information on Canada’s refugee programs, visit the CIC website atwww.cic.gc.ca.Follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/CitImmCanada.
