Prita Chhabra to Perform in Milton, Ft. Lauderdale

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Fresh off a live performance on CBS Tampa's morning talk show "Studio 10" in Florida, recording artist Prita Chhabra will be back in Canada to perform at Milton's Low Key Fest on August 27th at Karlovac Park.

Prita will then return to Florida to perform at Florida's biggest annual South Asian festival, IndoPak Fest, taking place September 18 at Ft. Lauderdale beach.
Prita was also recently chosen "artist of the day" by the Tampa Bay Times newspaper, and was interviewed for “The Ron Seggi Show” at Universal Studios in Orlando. Known as the “Tonight Show” of radio with over 15,000 celebrity interviews to date, “The Ron Seggi Show” broadcasts to over 1,100 radio stations around the world, including Armed Forces Radio.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Jack burst through Annabelle’s room.  Jack is a 7 year old who’s full of energy and very enthusiastic who has an eighteen year old sister named Annabelle.  Annabelle was sitting on her bed putting on nail polish.  “Lets go” Jack shouted from downstairs.  “To where?” she asked.  “Mom agreed for us to go to the CN tower, come on” Jack said.  “Wait” said Annabelle, she grabbed a pair of shoes and ran out to the car bare feet.  It’s time you got here”, Jack said.  “I came as fast as I could, now don’t touch my toes they’re drying.  “Fine” said Jack as soon as the car started.  Soon they were on their way.  “Where are we going again?” asked Annabelle.  “To the CN tower, duh” replied Jack. 






When they got there the two rushed to the ticket center.  There was a very short line for tickets so they quickly got them and went upstairs but it was almost closing time.  “Woah” said Jack “look at the view”.  “I’ll be in the bathroom putting on makeup if you need me” said Annabelle.  The two were paying so much attention on what they were doing, they didn’t hear the announcement that the CN tower was closing down in 5 minutes for summer break.  When Annabelle came out everybody was gone.  “Jack look” said Annabelle “nobody is here”.  “Now look at what you got us into’’ said Jack.  “It’s all your fault, you were looking at the window and not paying attention to what’s happening” said Annabelle.  And before they knew it they were in a fight. 




At the end of the fight Annabelle started to chase Jack.  They ended up in the little corridor when Jack said “na na na boo boo, ouch” and he fell down and broke his arm.  “Ow” he said “it hurts.  “Don’t worry, I know how to fix your arm but you will have to repay me” said Annabelle.  “Anything, it hurts” said Jack.  She put a bandage on his arm from the first aid kit right beside the fire hose.  When Annabelle was finished Jack said” Lets jump out the window”.  “Are you crazy?  That will ruin my makeup.  You are just so annoying” she said.  “I will get us out of hear” he coaxed.  “Fine” she said.  Jack found a hammer and smashed the window.  “Let’s go” he said.  “No” said Annabelle.  Meanwhile their parents were getting worried.  They called a security guard to come look for them.  Then they got hold of them and waited for their parents to come pick them up.  When they came their mom said “Oh my babys are you okay?” and hugged them so tight they couldn’t breath.  Then they hopped in the car and drove home together.

Sampradaya after TAJ

Artistic Director Lata Pada in Conversation with Celebrity Cultural Critic Samita Nandy for StarBuzz

The word ‘Sampradaya,’ for Artistic Director Lata Pada, represents the transmission of tradition.  Commissioned by Luminato for 2011 festival TAJ showcased Sampradaya Dance Creations’ distinct voice in Canada’s performing arts.
Lata Pada contends that the four sold out performances highlight the potential of this production to tour beyond its world premiere in Toronto in June 2011 at the Fleck Theatre of the Harbourfront Centre. A premiere is an opportunity to get the work ‘ on its feet’; preparing it for a remount is a wonderful chance to revisit the production, find deeper meaning, look at what worked and what did not, and how effectively all the elements came together. Sampradaya is now preparing to take the work across Canada and hopefully to India as well.
Currently, her company Sampradaya Dance Creations is doubling studio space.  It is acquiring the studio next to the existing one and is in full swing of reconstruction and enhancement of its facilities.  The new studio is a 7400 square foot facility.  Pada reveals that this will be a “performance hub of music, dance, and theatre for young South Asian performers – musicians, dancer, and actors – to find an opportunity for their art to be seen.”  Sampradaya Dance Creations will “mentor and guide emerging talent in their art.”


Lata Pada draws on rasa theory in Indian aesthetic studies and sheds light on the success of her performances.  For her, “the rasa [essence of aesthetic experience] is one that performer and audience member must participate in equally. It is that process of mutual and synergistic sharing that creates the magic of the moment. For any artist, that can translate into something quite transformative and ultimately needs to be the goal of any artistic communication.
The interplay of Lata Pada’s stagecraft and performances exemplifies this in her latest production TAJ.  Pada contends that “training, experience, maturity, personal connection to spoken words, scenes, sensitivity and vulnerability on stage” plays an emotional role in performance arts.  The tactile experience that you face then and experience on the stage is communicated to the audience.  The audience is brought into the space, the world of the play. During the world premiere of TAJ, the theatre and its stage were not large and, hence, created conditions for immediacy and proximity with actors Kabir Bedi and Lisa Ray.  Pada states that if the theatre was “bigger and larger, that would have distanced” the actors.  Instead, TAJ brought “proximity and synergistic relation between actors and audience.” At that time, Pada reveals, “you are not thinking star / celebrity on the stage.  Theatre is live, palpable, and ephemeral.  Every performance is different.  There can be flaws and no opportunities for retakes.  All actors recognize this.  If they have acted in films, they know the difference.”

If it feels like you’ve been bombarded with Vancouver based artists lately there’s a good reason for it: The City of Glass keeps cranking out quality musicians with diverse musical visions at an alarming rate. Take Christa Couture, for example. From the start she established herself as a fearless and razor-sharp songwriter comfortable enough in her own skin not to shy away from delivering brave lyrics with effortless, quirky grace and heart-on-sleeve intensity. Though Christa has been on a two year hiatus, luckily for us, she’s returning to work (and form) with the digital release of two brand spanking new EP’s this July: Loved and Lost.

Since her critically acclaimed debut Fell Out Of Oz (2005), and her sophomore effort, The Wedding Singer and the Undertaker (2008), Christa Couture has continued to sharpen her quill, along with her penchant for biting wit and an innate gauge for how deep to plumb the emotional seas of her personal experiences. These first two albums saw Couture developing as a multi-instrumentalist, stretching her limits as a songwriter and, guided by Vancouver producer Futcher, on her sophomore effort in particular, acquainting herself with dense production and orchestration that saw the inclusion of horns and strings. Not surprisingly, The Wedding Singer and the Undertaker hit the Top 10 on CBC Radio 3 and won "Best Folk Acoustic Album" and nominated for "Best Female Artist" at the 2008 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, including performing at the awards gala at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. In addition, she recently played at the 2011 JUNOFest in Toronto, "Brief Encounters 16" in Vancouver, and joined chamber-pop quartet E.S.L. and electro-cellist Cris Derksen on five B.C. tour dates in April.

To say we are pleased to have Couture back and composing is an understatement. Loved features five stunning fan favourites, while Lost is a delectable, eclectic mix of five unreleased songs from the same time period: an alternately arranged song, three tracks from a previously unreleased side project, and an early demo of one of Couture’s first songs. In other words, something for critics, fans and newbies alike.

Anchor Baby feature film premieres in Canada in Home Town debut

Immigration thriller "Anchor Baby" set for Canadian theatrical premiere in Toronto's Albion Cinema
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Jul 08, 2011 – Canadian produced feature film “Anchor Baby” an immigration thriller written directed and produced by  Lonzo Nzekwe is set to open in Toronto's Albion Cinema.

The plotline is as follows: Married, illegal immigrant couple Joyce (Omoni Oboli) and Paul Unanga (Sam Sarpong) are ordered to leave the U.S. but choose to go in hiding instead. They are waiting for Joyce who is five months pregnant, to deliver the baby to guarantee automatic U.S. citizenship for their child. When Paul is caught and deported by agent Mark Castello (Michael Scratch), Joyce is left to struggle on her own to accomplish their dream.

The film features Nollywood star Omoni Oboli (Figurine, Guilty Pleasures), Ghanaian-raised LA-based Sam Sarpong (Street Kings, The Dedd Brothers, Keeping Up with the Steins), Canadian actress/songwriter Terri Oliver and Canadian actor/model Michael Scratch (The Body Machine, Forensic Science). It grossed over 150,000 USD in Nigeria, making it the 3rd highest earning Nigerian movie in Nigeria cinemas after a 10 week run.

Speaking of his choice to cast lead actress Omoni Oboli, writer-director-producer Lonzo Nzekwe said, “That decision is one of the best decisions I made in the earlier stages of production. I wanted someone who could transform the script and bring it to life. When I watched a few of Omoni’s movies… that’s when I decided she was the one.”

“Anchor Baby” won Best Film and Best Actress at the Harlem Film Festival, the Emerging 20 award at the Reelworld Film Festival, the Award of Merit at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood and the official selection of the Africa International Film Festival.

RBC Mosaic Festival 2011

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Mosaic 2011 presents more than 26 hours of entertainment on main stage showcasing some of the most popular international and local artists and performers on July 8-10. The main stage will remain active from 11:00am to 11:00pm on Saturday July 9th and from 12:00 noon to 9:00pm on Sunday July 10th. “It will be bigger than ever with more than 26 hours of entertainment – and that’s just on the main stage,” said Arshad Mahmood, who co-founded the Mosaic Festival with his wife, Asma, in 2006.“I am expecting a record turnout”, added Mahmood. “Especially since the festival is returning to Civic Square (renamed Mississauga Celebration Square after a major makeover) after being exiled to Living Arts Park last summer. It’s a much larger venue with two stages – the main one and the amphitheatre – so we can showcase more performers,” he said.

Headliners include Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, the biggest singing sensation to hit the sub-continent in recent times; Sain Zahoor Ahmad, BBC’s “Voice of the Year” in 2006; H. Dhami, named “Best Newcomer” by the U.K. Asian Music Awards in 2008; and Vancouver’s premier bhangra band, En Karma. A popular mainstay, Shiamak’s Indo Jazz Dance Movement, will make its fifth appearance at the festival. “Shafqat and Sain are both making their first appearance in North America and Dhami is extremely hot in the U.K and here in Canada,” said Mahmood.

New this year is Desi’s Rock, with five bands with South Asian members or musical influence – Dead Shyre, Swaras, Nawtiks, Sing Bandana Singh and Kazak – performing. They'll be in the amphitheatre, rejigged with new sound and lighting, on July 9 from noon-6 p.m. Back for the sixth year is Rock the Coliseum, which has presented more than 80 Indie bands since 2006. This year’s lineup features Burning Love, Ryan Masters and The Pinnacle People, The Coppertone, Indian Handcrafts, Titan, Greys, Treble Warriors, Creeper, Infernal Arms, Cunter, Morning Thieves, The North, Gentlemen Husbands, Hi Kyle and Kick The Door Down Jackie. Directed by Mahmood’s daughter, Bushra, the 15 bands will also perform in the amphitheatre all three days. The Mosaic Film Festival, now in its fifth year, runs July 6-7 at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. This year’s offerings are East is East and West is West by director Damien O’Donnell. 

RBC Mosaic is not only about music, dance and films; festival-goers can also enjoy midway rides, fashion shows and lots of food. Then there’s the Underground Garage Sale featuring the work of young artists and a dance competition.

“This is an opportunity for dancers of different calibres to showcase their talent. At Mosaic, we believe there’s a hidden dancer in each one of us,” said Mahmood.
All the entertainment is free.

“We’re the only festival in Mississauga that can boast that,” said Mahmood.

Prita Chhabra to Perform at Pride Toronto - July 2, 2011

Prita will be taking the stage at 9:35 PM, accompanied by Toronto's acclaimed Diyas Arts & Entertainment dance team.

A brand new South Asian program at Pride Toronto, "brOWN // out" is a mix tape of adventures programmed by a random sampling of the Greater Toronto Area's queer South Asians. Pride is one of North America's biggest cultural festivals, with over 1 million attendees expected for its 2011 festivities.
Prita will be following her performance at Pride Toronto with a flight the next morning to the beaches of her current home state of Florida, for the filming of a forthcoming music video from her highly anticipated sophomore album, to be released late 2011.

"As of July 1, 2011, I become the owner and director of the Penticton School of Dance in British Columbia. This is the same school I grew up dancing and receiving my training at since the age of three, studying ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, musical theatre, contemporary and singing. I remember being 16 years old and can remember exactly where I was standing when I said to myself that I would one day run this dance school. It's crazy, that along with my dream of touring and singing with AR, that this came true. These were two of biggest dreams and they both came true within a year of each other. With the new and certified teachers I have coming in to teach at the school, my students can now begin receiving high-school credits towards attaining their high-school diplomas through dance classes. This is something new for our community. I thank Babaji everyday for giving me this opportunity to give back to my hometown and the people who have supported me from the beginning of my career".

Who are you? A dancer, singer or an actor? You do many things. What is most close to you?
  I'm all three. I also love to write, choreograph and direct (be it stage or film).

There are many classical dance forms, but why did you take to Kathak?  
 I started Kathak lessons in India when I was 7. Everytime I went back to India with my family to visit, I would pick it up again. After highschool, I decided to dedicate 6 months to going to India to study the form. After the 6 months were up, I'd realized I'd only barely scratched the surface of this form of art - if that, even. I love the form because of its fierce, rhythmic physical and musical elements, and the fact that it's all story-based on these incredible religious texts. Radha and Krishna are dynamic characters and their stories are beautiful.

How does the classical Indian dance influence the modern fusion dance?
For me, I grew dancing ballet from the age of 3 and picking up forms like jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, etc. It wasn't until I started studying classical Indian dance, however, that I really clued into how important the storytelling element is in dance all around. Studying classical not only improved my story telling, but also my tap dancing, given all of the dynamic footwork!

What do you prefer - stage or films? Why?
They are two completely different forms of performance, so it's really hard for me to pick which one I enjoy more because I love them both! I will say there is no other experience than that of performing for a live audience. I feed off of the energy that a live audience gives me. So much fun!

How was your Broadway stage experience?
Beautiful, challenging (in a great, growing way!), inspiring, demanding (8 shows a week!).... those are a few.

How was it working with A R Rahman?
I have learned and grown so much as a person and artist thanks to AR. I'm blessed in that this is the 3rd time I've worked with him on a major stage production. Performing alongside him on his World Tour takes the cake though. He is great to work with -  a true visionary. He inspires me.

Where do you want to be in the future?
Healthy, inspired, and doing what I love.

Any message to aspiring artists?
Know your craft. But more importantly, stay inspired!!

About Krystal:

Singer/dancer/actress Krystal Kiran Garib  made her Broadway debut in 2004 as part of the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Rahman’s Tony-nominated musical Bombay Dreams, becoming the youngest South Asian woman to perform on Broadway in the process. Soon after, Krystal joined the cast of The Lord Of The Rings, for which Rahman, known as the ‘Mozart of Madras’, composed the score.


In addition to dancing at music concerts by Jay Sean, Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys among others, Krystal Kiran Garib landed roles alongside John Travolta in Hairspray and Jessica Alba in The Love Guru, even choreographing Alba’s Bollywood dance routine. An active philanthropist, Krystal has also produced numerous charitable galas including two for the Speech & Stuttering Institute, raising over $40,000 for the organization.


As one of the key cast of Rahman’s  Jai Ho: The Journey Home world tour, Krystal Kiran Garib has performed Rahman’s compositions from films such as Slumdog Millionaire, Couples Retreat, Guru, and Rahman’s 1992 breakout hit Roja at 7 stadium shows to date, reaching audiences of over 1.5 million.


In-between shows, Krystal Kiran Garib has been working on directing a short film project for the Bravo! Channel, while balancing TV appearances on NBC’s Good Morning America and ABC’s Live With Regis And Kelly to name a few.

The Carassauga Festival of Cultures was celebrated with much pomp and full traditional splendour on the 3rd, 4th & 5th of June 2011 in Missississauga. The India Pavillion was at Hershey Centre, which as usual, was one of the most popular pavilion. It was again organised for the 26th year by the NAIC (National Association of Indo Canadians) under the able leadership of its President Mr Manmohan Singh and his team consisting of Chair Meena Chopra, Treasurer Maninder Atwal, Advisors Tony Marwah, Manoj Goel, Virat Bhat, Shashi Jain & Aruna Bhatnagar, Co-Chairs Chintan Bhavsar & Kamlesh Oberoi, Programming Co-ordinator Mr GV Sreeram and Co-ordinator Nita Balani.


There were many young volunteers who also contributed their bit. The main sponsors of the India Pavillion were Scotia Bank and Windmobile. The Pavilion consisted of 30 vendors who had put up their stalls of, dresses, gift items, jewellery, leather goods, henna etc. Brar Sweets were dishing out tantalising & mouth watering Indian dishes. The audiences were enthralled and entertained by the non-stop enchanting stage performances, dances and songs by talented Indian artists and performers.

Prominent important personalities who visited the India Pavilion were Mr Jason Kenney, Hnble Minister of Citizenship & Multiculturalism, Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga Mr Bob Delaney MPP Streetsville and Ms. Charandasi from Indian Consulate among others.

Canada's Top Talent to Headline Canada Day on Parliament Hill

StarBuzz Weekly,-OTTAWA, June 9, 2011 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission (NCC), today announced the programming for the Canada Day Noon and Evening shows.
"Canada Day belongs to all Canadians. This year, we invite everyone to take part in the Canada Day Noon Show in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," said Minister Moore. "We invite all Canadians across this great country to come together on this special day and celebrate the fact that we live in a free, democratic, and bilingual country."

"The Canada Day celebrations in the Capital region are a window on the entire country, a wonderful opportunity to share our common values, aspirations, and achievements," said Ms. Lemay. "On July 1, there will be a sea of red and white as Canadians gather in the Capital to celebrate our country's 144th birthday and welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."
Canada Day will also mark the 100th anniversary of Parks Canada, the world's oldest parks service. The Cultural Capitals of Canada for 2011-the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia; Lévis, Quebec; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island-will also be highlighted.
Parliament Hill
On July 1, Parliament Hill will be the setting for Canada Day celebrations. Thousands of Canadians will converge on the Hill to mark their country's birthday. In the morning, they will be able to attend the Peace Tower carillon concert at 9:00 a.m., the traditional flag-raising ceremony at 9:30, and the Changing of the Guard at 10:00.
Canada Day Noon Show
The Noon Show will include the traditional flypast of CF-18s and the Snowbirds Demonstration Team. It will highlight the new mission of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the new Canadians' citizenship celebration, and the centennial of Parks Canada.

The Noon Show is a presentation of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the NCC. It will be broadcast live on television through CBC, CBC News Network, Radio-Canada, and RDI, and rebroadcast on their websites.

Ottawa Model Reaches For The Stars From The Miss Universe Canada Runway

Jun 12, 2011 – Canadian Model Betsy Leimbigler from Ottawa, Ontario is competing amongst 57 other finalists from across the country for a coveted shot at the Miss Universe Canada title, and ultimately the Miss Universe crown itself. At just 20 years old, Leimbigler completed her University degree this June with Honours in International Studies and Modern Languages (she speaks 5) and is doing her Master’s in Political Science at the University of Ottawa. She was selected nationwide as a Senate Page and Parliamentary Guide to work on Parliament Hill. Having also studied, lived and traveled across Asia, Europe and Canada Leimbigler is definitely a tough contender when it comes to this competition.

As part of her role and rigorous training as an MUC contestant, Leimbigler will be fundraising for charity and has organized a fashion and mini Miss Universe pageant for both Ottawa’s fashion elite and political figures. Leimbigler boasts an impressive background in charity work. Through her modeling agency Barrett Palmer and her personal dedication to community work, she has amassed a long resume that include various charities and organizations across Canada, and even received awards and scholarships for her efforts.

“I wanted to create a fashion component to fundraising. I was inspired by recent charity fashion events held in Ottawa such as the Walk the Truth charity show, and being a model, I knew that I was going to incorporate fashion to get people engaged.” The “It Takes A Runway” fashion event is being held to raise funds for SOS Children’s Villages, an organization that is dedicated to raising and supporting orphaned and abandoned children from around the world. Recently, a handful of previous year’s Miss Universe Canada finalists took a trip to Nicaragua to help inaugurate computer labs for orphans and volunteer their time with kids. “I am excited to be able to hand SOS Children’s Villages a cheque from all of the generous donations we will be receiving at the event and be able to contribute in a different way.”        

The event is being held in partnership with fashion/charity sponsor publicist Shaun Marq from B.A.D PR and SPEAK NOW and stylist Alison Hughes from AMH Style, and features clothing designs from Jana Hanzel and Emilia Torabi, as well as Jewellery from Mafia, Pish Posh, Leah Christina and Pica. Local fashionista Erica Wark will be emceeing, while Betsy will also play host to the evening and has created a mini pageant where she will model a gown and take Q and A from the attendees.

It Takes A Runway is being held next Wednesday June 15th from 6:30 -9:30 PM at AMH Style and the Guest Room at 1440 Wellington St Ottawa. Minimum donation will be $10 at the door and guests will enjoy sponsored food and drinks.

TORONTO CELEBRATED 5 YEARS OF desiFEST

Toronto, ON (June 6, 2011) – Canada’s largest South Asian music concert desiFEST (presented by Rogers) celebrated a milestone 5 year anniversary on Saturday May 28, 2011 with record numbers of fans at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto, Ontario.



Over 35,000 visitors danced and enjoyed live entertainment over 12 hours.  Canadian and International artists came together with host SatsB to celebrate five years of desiFEST.  It is the only festival in North America that provides a platform to showcase South Asian music and its best to mainstream audiences. 


Taz and Stereo Nation closed the evening with an electrifying performance with the crowd singing along word for word.  Special guest, Toronto’s very own Roach Killa, returned after his own performance to sing with the band.


Navin Kundra made his 2^nd debut, wowing the crowd with a remix of Bruno Mars “Nothin’ on You”. As the organizing team always has surprises, the crowd was shocked by Anita Lerche, a Caucasian lady from Denmark singing in Punjabi. This was her very first appearance in Toronto and desiFEST.


Canadian artists performances included: Swaras, Prita Chhabra, Raju Johal, Kateyez, Indy Sagu, Rebecca Nazz, Parichay, and The Bilz & Kashif to name a few. Checkout www.desifest.ca for full line-up.
