Cuss words in Shayari and Ghazals

Gulzar will definitely strike the right chord with his great ghazals and shayari compositions but Sampooran Singh Kalra might not be a familiar name in poetry world.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Sep 27, 2011 - This veteran lyricist, poet and director and the man who penned the Oscar winning track Jai Ho, was in Ahmedabad to recite his shayaris to Urdu poetry lovers. Hours prior to the shayari session, Gulzar got chatty and was at his wittiest best when Ahmedabad Times caught up with him. We asked him how he liked Ahmedabad. Gulzar flashed a warm smile and said, "This is not my first visit here. I've come to Ahmedabad several times and am well-versed with the city. I've even written poems about this city." Interestingly, Gulzar is also busy, "translating two Gujarati poetry books."

What is it like penning songs in present day Bollywood films? Pat comes the reply, "If we write a song like Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki today, will it make any sense? You neither have aangan nor tulsi in most urban homes. The transformation of lyrics was inevitable. Besides when I write lyrics for a film, I get all minute details on the storyline, location, character, situation and characters' lingo - keeping all that in mind, I pen the song. I can't stick to yesteryear language as it won't have any relevance in contemporary films." So what does he feel about the usage of abusive words in lyrics which are quite a rage now? "What's wrong with using abusive words in songs? Cinema reflects society. Films have not invented such cuss words, they're used in daily life by people anyway. Just because a film uses them in a song doesn't mean those films are to be blamed for the usage of cuss words," he says.

Gulzar's directed various critically claimed films like Parichay, Koshish, Aandhi, Ijaazat, Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. What's keeping him from direction? "I feel film-making is too time consuming process and will leave me no time to focus on writing poetry or lyrics. Plus, I have developed a new attraction for theatre, so I'd like to focus my attention there," says Gulzar. Does he miss the people he has worked with? "Oh yes! I miss all the actresses I have worked with and miss Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra and Shammi Kapoor," he says.

Gulzar's works talk about the common man. How does he feel the pulse of the middleclass so well? He says, "I might be a celebrity today, but at every point of my life, I have to deal with a common man. And, don't forget I come from a middleclass background too!"

On a parting note, we can't help asking about his fascination for the crisp, pristine white kurta pyjama that's become his signature attire? He smiles disarmingly, "White's the colour I love."

IndianArtCollectors.com Features Samir Mondal's Water-coloured Canvases

    The Vase
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Jul 04, 2011 – Samir Mondal, often referred to as the 'Watercolour man', surfaces as an artist whose contribution to the field of art is tremendous. Collaborating with the internationally famed artist, IndianArtCollectors.com will feature Mondal's art-work, starting July 1, uptill July 31, 2011.

Not being too keen just to paint the cliched landscapes with watercolours, Samir Mondal has taken the medium to newer heights. “40 years back when I started painting, I realized that watercolours were not getting their deserved status; they were considered child's play. Watercolours start breaking on paper as they are foggy and weightless. I keenly noticed the manner of oil-painting, observing its structural quality, richness and heaviness. In a struggle to introduce these elements in watercolour, I have tried to paint my canvases using watercolours by adding textures and structural features as if they are oils,” explains Mondal.

The month long display of the artists work at IndianArtCollectors.com will feature human faces and flowers, in crisp, happy palettes. Speaking on the occasion, Mondal shares, “IndianArtCollectors.com is just the same click at every place. It does not divide us by any boundaries.”

Mondal has widely exhibited and has collaborated with eminent poet and media person Pritish Nandy on various projects. He has created the Mulla Naseeruddin series for The Illustrated Weekly and his full page portraits of film stars and other prominent personalities in The Sunday Observer have won him accolades. Also, his art-work, specially  painted for the movie 'Taare Zameen Par' has gained much appreciation. “We are more than proud to get such a versatile artist on board with us,” says Anuja Lath, Co-Founder and CEO, IndianArtCollectors.com.

Sharing a few notes about the exhibition, Lath tells, “At display, would be the artists paintings, taking you to a journey of his life as a painter, spanned over 5 decades.”

With a staunch belief that virtual display of art has a deeper reach and penetration, IndianArtCollectors.com has taken to its stride, to regularly organize online exhibitions. “Any person, at any point of time and from any part of the world can be a part of these exhibitions. Bollywood Cinema Showcards Show opens at ROM.

Curator Deepali Dewan with Showcards acquired from Art Collector Bobby Kohli of New Delhi for Royal Ontario Museum
Indian Film Art from the 1950s  to 1980s StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-
An excellent show of Bollywood cinema Showcards opened at ROM on June 11 and is on view till October 2, 2011. Exhibition is showing the Indian Film Advertising Art from 1950s to th1980s.  The exhibition features over 120 works including showcards from the private collection of Angela Hartwick and a selection of posters, lobby cards and film booklets from Rom’s permanent collection.
The installation has   been patterned chronologically.  The interesting thing is that it traces down the aesthetic and thematic evolution of Bollywood graphic design as seen in its advertising since its inception till early 1990s.

The exhibition has been curated  by Dr. Deepali Deewan in collaboration with Hartwick collection.  Rom’s curator for South Asian Arts Dr. Dewan  says“ This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to explore the evolution of a specific form of advertising associated with the Hindi commercial cinema  centred around Mumbai. These show cards combine paint and photography and are unique aspect of South Asian visual culture, following their equally as remarkable predecessors-Indian Painted Photographs. They were originally produced by local artists but usually thrown out at the end of a film’s run. It is remarkable that this collection has survived at all.”
“Some thing that struck the most to me while going through the process of curation of this exhibition was the striking manifestation of paint and photography and the strong connection between the two. Show cards not only combined photography and painting but past with the present also.”
When asked if there is any  thing in Indian to attract  western main stream audience she said, “Indian cinema is more about fantasy and western audience is more trained to find the realism in cinema”.
Dewan feels that central force in Indian cinema has always been music. Indian cinema also revived the abhinya (expression) ,a traditional  art form in theatre and dance which was fading away.
