Twenty-Five New Canadians Meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

    StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-July 1, 2011
GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 1, 2011) - It is a special honour to become a Canadian citizen on Canada Day, but for 25 new Canadian citizens this Canada Day was unforgettable as they took their oath in front of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney, speaking at the special ceremony at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, said that The Duke and Duchess represent the future of the Crown, an institution integral to the Canadian story - its past, its present and its future.

"The Duke and Duchess represent the ongoing and everlasting vitality of the Crown, and its continuing place in our lives and in our hearts. The new Canadians getting their citizenship here today also represent the future - Canada's future," said Minister Kenney.

"On Canada Day we celebrate our many freedoms, as well as our history, symbols, events, people, institutions and values that define us as Canadians and give us our identity."

In Canada, we pledge allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen rather than a document such as a constitution, a banner such as a flag, or a geopolitical entity such as a country. In our constitutional monarchy, these elements are encompassed by the Queen. When we take the Oath of Citizenship, we make a solemn promise to follow the laws of Canada and to perform our duties as citizens. In return for that allegiance, the Canadian state - the Crown - guarantees to protect our rights and freedoms.

This Canada Day, approximately 2,000 people will take the Oath of Citizenship at 44 special citizenship ceremonies across the country.
